A mentor or leader recognizing a team member's good work in a collaborative, warm office setting to reinforce a positive organizational culture.

Many of you shared that you’re looking for ways to build a more positive culture.

That’s what I’m here for!

Let’s start with something simple — and powerful

Culture Is Built in Small, Repeated Moments

Not in big initiatives.
Not in posters on the wall.

But in everyday interactions.

What leaders notice, reinforce, and repeat
quickly becomes “how things are done around here.”

And that’s what culture IS.

A Simple Culture Tool: Catch People Doing Something Right

Most workplaces are very good at noticing what’s wrong.

But what we focus on… grows.

So here’s a small shift that has a big impact:

Notice something going right — and say it out loud.

Examples:

  • “I saw how you handled that situation — that was really thoughtful.”
  • “You stayed calm under pressure there — that made a difference.”
  • “I appreciate how you followed through on that.”

Why this works:

When people feel seen for what they’re doing well:

  • confidence increases
  • engagement rises
  • positive behaviors get repeated

And over time…

That becomes your culture.

I know it seems simplistic.

I’ve been studying cultures (not just business cultures) for more years than I’m willing to admit. At one point I wanted to be an anthropologist – but having to raise a child alone – meant that I needed to choose a career that actually could pay the bills. I never lost my love of cultures – and for years what fascinated me actually gave me the basis for what I teach now – how to create the kinds of cultures that people want to work in and customers want to come back for.

One small practice for this week:

Once a day:

Notice one positive behavior name it specifically

That’s it.

Simple.
Consistent.
Powerful.

Repeat. Frequently.

Because culture isn’t something you announce.

It’s something you reinforce.

Warmly,

JoAnna
